Is Five Weeks Too Late for Newborn Photos?

If those first few weeks have passed and you haven’t scheduled newborn photographs, you haven’t missed your opportunity. We can absolutely create beautiful images of your five-week-old baby.

There is a reason I recommend photographing newborns earlier when possible, but your baby’s age is only one part of planning their session. Their temperament, comfort, and preferences help guide the experience, too.

Why I Recommend Newborn Photos Around 7–15 Days

In my experience, babies between 7 and 15 days old are generally the sleepiest throughout their sessions. That can make it easier to settle them into the gently posed, sleepy portraits many parents envision.

For this reason, I recommend reaching out during pregnancy so we can plan ahead for those early days.

But that recommendation is a preferred window, not an expiration date. If your baby is already a few weeks old, there is still so much worth photographing.

Every Baby Is Different

Age doesn’t tell us everything about how a session will unfold. Some five-week-old babies settle comfortably and sleep through several setups. Some ten-day-old babies need more time for feeding, soothing, and cuddling.

Neither means anything has gone wrong.

I pay attention to the baby in front of me: how they like to be held, which positions feel comfortable, and when they need a break. Their individual temperament can influence the session just as much as their age.

You don’t need to arrive with a perfectly sleepy baby. Making room for your baby’s needs is part of my job.

What Changes at a Five-Week-Old Session?

With an older newborn, I may choose different poses, adjust the styling, or use props that better suit their size and comfort.

We can create a thoughtful mix of portraits using comfortable setups, close-up details, and time in your arms. If your baby is awake and content, those open-eyed photographs can bring another lovely dimension to the gallery.

The exact combination of images will depend on your baby. I follow their cues, allowing their comfort to guide each setup.

There Is Time to Settle In

At Portraits by Chaya, newborn sessions include unlimited session time, with space for feeding, changing, soothing, and simply holding your baby.

That flexibility matters at every age. You won’t need to worry that a feeding break or an unsettled stretch is taking up your session.

If your baby is already five weeks old, please reach out. We’ll talk about your baby, the photographs you’re hoping for, and how we can plan a newborn session that feels comfortable for your family.
