Creating Variety in Your Newborn Portrait Gallery

A newborn gallery can include many different looks while still feeling like one thoughtful collection. At my Waterbury, Connecticut studio, I plan colors, textures, props, and small details together, with your finished photographs in mind.

A Color Palette That Connects the Images

I usually begin with two or three coordinating colors and vary the shades throughout the session. Before choosing a backdrop or wrap, I consider how the images will look together on a wall or across an album spread. That helps us create variety without making every set feel unrelated.

Simple Portraits and Styled Sets

Some of parents' favorite photographs are the simplest ones, with the focus on their baby's face and tiny features. I balance these with selected props, different textures, and changes in perspective. Soft flokati textures, wood flooring, baskets, and bed props can each bring a different feeling to a collection.

Wraps, Accessories, and Gentle Changes

Different wraps, bonnets, and headbands can change the look of a portrait without requiring an entirely new set. During planning, I ask which accessories you love and which you would rather leave out. Wrapped and unwrapped portraits can both be considered, with your baby's comfort and settling guiding what we photograph.

Newborn posing and props are handled in the studio; this is a look at my styling process, rather than instructions for recreating poses at home. No particular pose is needed to create a personal gallery.

Florals, Greenery, and Meaningful Details

A small touch of florals or greenery can add depth to a set. Little hearts, teddies, and other accessories can bring personality, too. These details work best when they support the portrait and the palette we have chosen together.

A Recent Session in Dusty Pink, Mauve, and Cream

For the session below, we used soft dusty pink, shades of mauve, and cream. Mom preferred headbands, so I included different styles throughout the gallery. Florals brought a delicate touch to one set, while pampas grass created a more natural feel in another.

A soft pink flokati was used for baby and a cream one for sibling portraits. A tall cradle, bed props, basket, heart bowl, and bucket added different shapes, while changes in the backdrops and wood flooring helped each setup feel distinct.
