Tips for Capturing Variety for Newborn Portrait Sessions

Creating Beautiful Variety for Your Newborn Session , Tips and Tricks

There are an infinite amount of ways to style your newborn photography sessions, to create a gorgeous gallery. Variety is the spice of life and the key to creating a rave-worthy gallery that your clients will love!

When setting up for my sessions, there are a few things that I keep in mind while making my selections for materials to be used in the sessions.

1) Color Scheme

Using a variety of colors and/ or shades of color helps to create depth in your gallery. Typically I use 2-3 different colors with varying shades that coordinate well together. My thought process is always results first; how will these images look together on a wall or together in an album spread? This will help guide you when setting up for your sessions.

2) Props/ Table poser/Mini Trampoline

There are so many gorgeous props available to use in sessions and the images in the props are so adorable. Often,  I find that some of the parents' favorite images are the images on the beanbag /table poser! I like to create balance and do several poses on the poser, before transitioning to the floor props. When using props, I use props of varying shapes, colors, and heights to vary it up as well.

I also like making use of a mini trampoline for those top-down poses. There are so many ways you can style it to create something unique for your client.

Last, the flokati images add a beautiful touch to any gallery. Whether you have a variety of flokati colors or just one neutral color you can incorporate it into your staple workflow.

3) Swaddled/Unswaddled and positioning - head down, chin on hands style, bum up style for beds.

I love incorporating a variety of swaddled and unsaddled poses in your sessions. When unsaddled there are many ways you can pose the baby to create beautiful images on a table poser or a newborn bed. Some of my favorite poses are the side- lying, bum up and chin on hands poses.  When swaddled, you can create variety as well using different swaddling styles for your top wrap. The crisscross-style wrap is a personal favorite of mine! You can swaddle toes in or toes out as well when swaddled to give your swaddle a different look altogether.

4) Use of Florals or Greenery

I love incorporating some florals or greenery into my sets. The setup does not need to be elaborate to give your images an extra wow factor. It does take a little longer to incorporate the florals while setting up, but the results are well worth it!

5) Headbands, Hats, Lovies, and accessories

When setting up, I put out many accessories to match each set. I love to give the parents a choice regarding bonnets, headbands, etc. If the baby is on his/her best behavior we can do both and then the parents can see which they like better in the final image.

Lovies such as hearts, teddies, and mini dolls are my favorite to incorporate into my sessions. These are generally low-cost additions that add so much to the final images and the parents love them!

Below is a recent session from the studio!

We used soft dusty pink, shades of mauve, and creams to create a beautiful variety for this princess. Mom liked headbands best, so we went with a variety of different style bands throughout the session.

We incorporated a touch of florals into one of the sets, and the pampas grass in another for a more natural vibe. Two flokatis were used, a soft pink for the baby and a cream for the sibling images to create cozy inviting images. For props, we used a tall cradle, bed props, basket, heart bowl, and bucket prop for some beautiful variety. In addition, different backdrops were used to change up the look including wood flooring.
