The Beauty of Fall Family Photos in Connecticut: A Guide to Planning Your Portrait Session

There is something especially beautiful about fall in Connecticut.

The golden light, vibrant foliage, cozy textures, and changing landscape create a naturally beautiful setting for family photographs. But perhaps what makes fall portraits most meaningful is how quickly this season passes.

Children grow. Families change. And before you know it, another year has gone by.

Why Fall Is One of the Most Popular Times for Family Photos

Connecticut gives us some of the most beautiful scenery for fall family portraits.

The changing leaves provide a naturally rich backdrop, while the softer autumn light creates a beautiful, timeless quality in photographs.

But the scenery is only part of what makes fall family portraits so special.

Maybe your little one just started kindergarten. Maybe your children are suddenly looking much older than they did last year. Maybe your family has grown, or you're simply realizing that you haven't had professional portraits taken together in far too long.

One of My Favorite Fall Locations: Fulton Park

One of my favorite places to photograph families in the fall is Fulton Park in Waterbury, just minutes from my studio.

And Fulton Park isn't simply a beautiful place to photograph.

This historic park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, the landscape architecture firm that continued the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted, the renowned landscape designer associated with New York City's Central Park.

The park's thoughtful landscape design, mature trees, winding paths, open spaces, and beautiful views create an environment that feels timeless and intentional.

In the fall, it becomes especially beautiful.

The foliage at Fulton Park can be incredibly vibrant, but that color is fleeting. There is typically only a short window of roughly two weeks when the foliage reaches its most beautiful, colorful peak.

That makes timing especially important.

I keep an eye on the changing foliage and plan these sessions carefully around the season so that we can capture the location at its best.

You don't have to figure out when the leaves will be perfect. That's part of my job.

You simply arrive, enjoy your family, and let me take care of the rest.

What Should We Wear for Fall Family Photos?

One of my favorite parts of preparing for a family session is helping families create a wardrobe that photographs beautifully.

I don't recommend everyone wearing identical outfits. Instead, I love creating a cohesive color palette through complementary tones, textures, and layers.

Some beautiful fall combinations include:

Soft taupes and creams
Warm neutrals
Denim

Dusty rose
Warm autumn tones
Cozy knits and textured layers

The goal is a wardrobe that feels coordinated without looking overly matched—and that complements both your family and the natural setting.

And when you arrive at the studio, Mom can truly settle in and enjoy the experience. Complimentary professional hair and makeup artistry is provided for Mom before your session, so you can feel polished, confident, and camera-ready without having to arrange it yourself.

For busy families, we can make the experience even more convenient. If getting ready at the studio isn't practical, our professional hair and makeup team can come to your home instead. You can get ready while the children nap, get dressed, have breakfast, or simply go about your morning—without having to add another stop to your day.

It's one of the little details that makes a big difference for busy families.

And Then We Have Fun

One of my favorite parts of what I do is simply being around children.

From tiny babies and toddlers to elementary-aged children and teenagers, I genuinely enjoy getting to know each child's personality and finding ways to make the session fun and comfortable for them.

Every family is different, and every child is different. Some children are naturally outgoing, while others need a little more time to warm up. Some love being in front of the camera, while others would rather be anywhere else.

That's okay.

We work together to create an experience where everyone feels comfortable, involved, and genuinely enjoys themselves. Sometimes that means playing, laughing, talking, taking a break, or simply letting your children be themselves.

My goal isn't just to create beautiful photographs. It's to give your family a genuinely wonderful experience while creating them.
