When I photograph a newborn, I’m thinking about much more than the individual photograph in front of my camera. I’m thinking about the colors, textures, layers and little details that will come together to create an entire collection of images.
Styling has always been an important part of my creative process. I love soft, muted color palettes, beautiful textures and timeless pieces that allow the focus to remain on the baby while still giving each image its own sense of depth and artistry.
There are so many beautiful newborn photography props available today, but for me, choosing a piece is never simply about how it looks on its own.
I’m always thinking about how it will photograph, how it will work with the other elements of the session and how it will help me create different images throughout the gallery.
And when it comes to the newborn knits I use, function is just as important as beauty.
I particularly love them for their incredible stretch and generous length, which allows for creative wrapping and styling while keeping the baby beautifully and securely wrapped.
The length of these wraps is intentional, giving me the flexibility to create the ideal rounded “potato” wrap as well and utilize creative wrapping techniques that I use throughout my sessions.
But the details don't stop with wraps.
We also create beautiful little outfits, from delicate tutus to sweet rompers, along with coordinating bonnets finished with luxurious velvet details. I love the way velvet adds another layer of texture and elevates even the simplest setup.
Those small details can completely change the feeling of an image. A soft velvet trim, a beautiful texture or a carefully chosen color can add just enough visual interest while keeping the overall look timeless and refined.
These are pieces I truly love working with and find myself reaching for again and again in my own sessions.
My approach to newborn styling is heavily influenced by my love of color and design.
I’m naturally drawn to soft, sophisticated palettes — creams, oatmeals, sage, dusty rose, muted blues and other understated tones that photograph beautifully and stand the test of time.
I love bringing these colors together with different textures and layers to create images that feel cohesive without looking overly styled.
When a family looks through their finished gallery, I want the images to feel connected. Each photograph can have its own personality while still belonging to the same collection.
One of my favorite parts of being a full-service photographer is thinking beyond the session itself.
When I design a newborn session, I’m already thinking about how the photographs will eventually live together — in an heirloom album, a collection of framed artwork or throughout your home.
That means I’m considering the bigger picture from the very beginning.
The colors, textures and styling choices aren't isolated decisions. They become part of the visual story of your session and ultimately part of the artwork you take home.
My love of newborn styling has even extended beyond my own photography studio.
Through CCKnitShop, I help design and curate specialty newborn photography pieces with the same attention to color, texture, versatility and timeless styling that I bring to my portrait sessions.
Because I use these pieces in my own studio, I know firsthand what I look for in a newborn wrap or outfit — beautiful color and texture, but also the functionality that makes it genuinely useful during a session.
We’ve thoughtfully developed many of our colors to coordinate with Newborn Nerds seamless backgrounds, a staple among newborn photographers. We also love pairing them with Luneberry and Rozzi Rayne flokati rugs, another classic in newborn photography. When the colors and textures are designed to work beautifully together, creating those soft, monochromatic setups becomes much easier.
And of course, function matters just as much as appearance. Our wraps are designed with generous length and stretch to give photographers the flexibility to create beautiful, creative wraps while keeping the styling soft and refined.
I love creating pieces that photographers can reach for again and again — pieces that make it easier to create beautifully cohesive newborn portraits.
I love creating newborn galleries where the images feel connected without feeling repetitive. Every setup, color and texture is chosen with the larger collection in mind.
There may be dozens of little decisions happening behind the scenes, but the finished images should feel effortless — soft, timeless and beautifully considered.
That, to me, is the art of thoughtful newborn styling.
