Fort Stamford Park offers a lovely combination of historic character, formal garden elements, mature greenery, and architectural texture. The stone details and garden paths create an elegant setting without making the portraits feel overly formal.

I recently photographed a model session here and was immediately drawn to the variety the location offered. We were able to work among the stone features, garden areas, and surrounding greenery while maintaining a cohesive look throughout the gallery.

This location is especially well suited to families who love timeless outdoor portraits with a slightly romantic, European garden feeling. Soft neutrals, dusty rose, muted blue, sage, cream, taupe, and earthy colors would all complement the surroundings beautifully.

The architectural elements provide structure and depth, while the greenery keeps the finished portraits feeling warm and natural. This balance makes Fort Stamford a beautiful possibility for family, maternity, child, and senior portraits.

Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens | Stamford, CT

Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens is another beautiful Stamford location for family photography. Its gardens, wooded paths, natural landscapes, and seasonal plant life offer numerous possibilities within one property.

The Arboretum includes 93 acres of gardens, collections, and trails and is open throughout the year from dawn to dusk. Because the landscape changes with the seasons, a spring session can feel entirely different from one photographed during late summer or autumn. The family session photographed here was taken in early spring.

Why I Love Bartlett for Family Photography

I especially love Bartlett Arboretum for families who prefer an organic, understated setting. The natural greenery provides a soft background that allows your family and wardrobe choices to stand out without competing with the environment.

Its variety also makes it possible to create a gallery with several distinct looks while maintaining a consistent color story. We might begin near a landscaped garden, move toward a wooded path, and finish in a more open area as the evening light softens.

There are beautiful areas for classic family portraits, but there are also plenty of opportunities for children to explore, run, play, and interact with their parents. This allows me to capture genuine moments alongside beautifully composed portraits.

A Location I'm Excited to Photograph Next: Waveny Park | New Canaan, CT

I recently visited Waveny Park in New Canaan while scouting new Fairfield County photography locations, and I was immediately inspired by the possibilities.

Waveny House was built in 1912, and the property's landscape was designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm. The stately architecture, expansive lawns, garden areas, mature trees, and walking paths provide a beautiful combination of refined and natural backgrounds.

The location photographs included here were taken during my scouting visit and offer a glimpse of what caught my attention. I can already envision a thoughtfully styled family session incorporating both the architecture and the softer natural areas of the property.

When I help a family choose a location, I consider more than whether it is beautiful. I look at the ages of your children, how much walking will be comfortable, the season, the available light, your wardrobe colors, and the overall feeling you want your portraits to have.

What Is the Best Time for Outdoor Family Photos?

Outdoor family sessions are generally photographed during golden hour, when the sun is lower and the light becomes softer and more flattering. This usually means beginning approximately an hour and a half before sunset, although the exact starting time depends on the season, weather, and amount of shade at the chosen location.

Because every property handles light differently, I consider where the sun will fall, which sections become shaded first, and how we can move through the location efficiently while keeping the experience relaxed for your children.

Your wardrobe and location should be planned together rather than treated as separate decisions.
